What Every Woman Needs to Know Before Entering Politics to Thwart Intimidation

One of these is theSuspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan a sitting senator who represents the Kogi Central Senatorial district in the National Assembly.

No matter how you view it or whose support you have, one thing is clear: This event will be discussed extensively for years to come and will influence women's involvement in politics.

Although I have personal feelings about this issue, my intention is not to choose sides. Rather, it’s a chance to inform other women on how they can prevent such occurrences from happening again.

It deeply saddens me to witness Nigeria’s already low level of female political participation continue to decline due to systemic obstacles such as intimidation, allegations of sexual misconduct, and deep-seated patriarchal systems. This remains true even though some parts of the continent have made progress in women's representation.

Women, please listen closely. Below are several points you ought to consider before stepping into Nigerian politics to ensure you can sidestep potential intimidation and harassment down the line.

Inform yourself about the underlying reasons for intimidation and harassment.

Indeed, it’s unfeasible to grasp everything, yet numerous instances similar to this one have occurred before. Additionally, you cannot combat something unless you understand it well. Therefore, my constant recommendation for women is to extensively study gender-based harassment within political contexts.

Ultimately, you should be able to recognize when you’re under threat. To do this, engage with literature and periodicals, become part of communities advocating for proactive involvement, and participate in educational workshops. Gain insight into the misconceptions and truths surrounding gender-based violence in Nigeria and understand how societal norms perpetuate such issues.

Learn how to confront sexist and prejudiced remarks during intimate encounters.

Making an impact doesn’t require reaching the pinnacle. Gender-based harassment is a common issue we encounter daily. Be mindful of how you interact with both men and women. Notice instances where people deliberately belittle others because of their gender.

Using derogatory terms implies that women are less capable. Moreover, many of those individuals may hold public offices someday. Hence, addressing and stopping such sexist remarks at an early stage can teach them to treat women with more respect.

Challenge ideas and inquire further.

For someone aiming for a career in politics, it's important to remain critically aware and consistently challenge the way media represents women in magazines, online platforms, and TV shows. Should you encounter instances where the media dehumanizes women or employs violent imagery towards them, voice your concerns.

Contact the company directly or post about it on social media, emphasizing the adverse effects of their activities and initiatives.

Get the message out

There’s no need to depend solely on traditional news outlets to spread your message. Instead, use social media platforms to reach and inform as wide an audience as you can. Distribute articles, share updates, and offer guidance on avoiding gender-based harassment. Should each woman take it upon herself to enlighten her circle, incidents of harassment and coercion would significantly decrease.
