Anambra: APC Confirms Primary, Officially Nominates Ukachukwu as Candidate

The All Progressives Congress has formally confirmed the results of its primary election for the Anambra State governorship, supporting the choice of Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu as the party’s candidate for the gubernatorial vote scheduled on November 8, 2025.

Felix Morka, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, revealed this information in a statement following the National Working Committee meeting conducted on Wednesday in Abuja.

He characterized the primary as "just, believable, and open."

Ukachukwu won the primary conducted over the weekend by securing 1,455 votes, thereby defeating his nearest competitor, Valentine Ozigbo, who obtained only 67 votes.

The other candidates, Johnbosco Onunkwo and Edozie Madu, received 26 and 8 votes each, respectively. Additionally, the voting process included 26 invalid ballots.

The chairman of the APC's electoral committee and governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, had previously declared Ukachukwu as the winner.

Nonetheless, Valentine Ozigbo, who recently switched from the Labour Party, has contested the procedure, describing the primary as a "sham and farce" in a statement released on Tuesday. He has subsequently filed an appeal with the party’s Appeals Committee.

In spite of the objections, the party leaders have proceeded, handing Ukachukwu a certificate of return.

“The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress, on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, considered and approved the report of the Party’s Anambra State Governorship Primary Election,” the statement read.

“The Primary Election Committee, under the chairmanship of Governor Bassey Otu, declared Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu winner of the election with 1,455 votes.”

At the NWC meeting, APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, commended the committee for conducting a transparent process and urged all aspirants to close ranks in preparation for the general election.

“Presenting the APC Certificate of Return to Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, Dr. Ganduje charged all stakeholders, particularly the other aspirants and their supporters, to work for the Party’s victory in the November 8, 2025, Anambra State gubernatorial election,” the statement added.

After accepting his award, Ukachukwu voiced his support for President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, emphasizing that the APC has no intention of endorsing Governor Charles Soludo from the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

If APGA can be sold independently of the center, then why are they depending on the central authority? This is the first time Soludo has put himself forward as an individual candidate in an election. It’s up to us to decide if he has broad appeal. Tinubu remains committed to his party. There’s no way he would let this happen, nor will he allow it. So, why should Tinubu back him? Wouldn’t it make more sense to take what is rightfully yours rather than begging for it?

He similarly commended the President for adhering to democratic norms, stating: "I want to express my gratitude to Tinubu for maintaining the democratic tenets of free and fair processes. His commitment was evident in Anambra State; his message was strong and unequivocal."

I would also like to express my gratitude to the National Chairman and his Working Committee for their backing and unwavering stance in Anambra.

Ukachukwu finished by offering an olive branch to his fellow candidates, urging them to support him in order to ensure the party's victory at the elections.
