Philanthropist Agongo Joins Forces with Local Effort to Combat Hunger in Bongo District – International Edition (English)

A joint initiative spearheaded by philanthropist Alhaji Seidu Agongo and community organizer Janet Abugre has delivered essential food aid to the underprivileged inhabitants of Adaboya-Kunkoe, a remote village located in Ghana’s Upper East Region.

On April 28th, around 70 senior citizens—mostly widowed women and others too old, ill, or disabled to work the land—were granted portions from a total of 35 sacks of corn. This distribution took place much sooner than usual, typically scheduled for June, as an immediate response to critical food scarcity issues.

Now in its sixth year, the initiative initially backed 20 recipients but saw substantial growth this year thanks to Agongo's participation.

Abugre, who hails from Adaboya-Kunkoe, stressed the choice to provide food rather than money to guarantee immediate access to sustenance. "An initiative started to assist roughly 20 people has expanded to benefit approximately 70 recipients due to Alhaji Agongo's kind donation," she stated. The value of each sack of corn, ranging from GH₵ 40,000 to GH₵ 42,000, was shared amongst three families to extend the impact.

Adaboya-Kunkoe's dependence on subsistence agriculture has been challenged by unpredictable rain patterns and meager yields, worsening food scarcity issues. To reduce stigmatization, the distribution took place at a neutral location, supported by younger volunteers who helped those unable to move around easily or confined to their beds receive aid.

Community leader Bernard Adongo facilitated the event, starting with a prayer conducted by a beneficiary, highlighting shared thankfulness.

Agongo, a businessman from Accra who has a track record of aiding underprivileged groups, emphasized the collaboration as a component of his larger charitable endeavors. Despite this year’s contribution representing advancement, Abugre pointed out remaining gaps, encouraging ongoing assistance to benefit additional inhabitants.

This effort highlights an increasing dependence on local collaborations to address climate-related issues in northern Ghana, where unpredictable rainfall patterns pose significant risks to farming sustainability.

These initiatives tackle urgent food shortages and simultaneously strengthen communal bonds in areas heavily impacted by erratic environmental conditions.
