Kenya Aims to Create a Secondary KQ Hub in Accra for Enhanced West African Connections
Kenya has formally requested the government of Ghana to allow its national carrier, Kenya Airways (KQ), to establish a secondary hub in Accra as part of efforts to enhance air connectivity within West Africa and to global destinations.
During his official trip to Accra, Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir extended a personal message of good will from President William Ruto to Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and the citizens of Ghana. It was here that Chirchir also put forth a particular request.
"To foster greater personal connections among individuals and boost economic ties to reinforce intra-African commerce in line with the goals set out by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), I asked President Mahama to contemplate permitting Kenya Airways to create an additional hub in Accra," stated Chirchir.
He stated that the proposal is consistent with the wider objectives of the AfCFTA agreement, whose headquarters for the secretariat is located in Accra, aiming to strengthen continental integration and foster economic growth throughout Africa.
Chirchir observed that Kenya and Ghana have maintained strong diplomatic and commercial relationships for an extended period and are dedicated to enhancing their collaboration via the Binational Commission Cooperation Framework.
At present, Kenya Airways offers services to multiple West African nations such as Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Senegal, and Cameroon.
Setting up an additional hub in Accra was proposed to strategically place Ghana as a crucial air transit point for the area. This move aims to strengthen commerce, travel, and financial connections between West Africa and the global community.
He further noted that this strategic hub would boost Accra’s standing as a key aviation center in the region and aid economic growth in Ghana and the wider West African area.
This shift is anticipated to bolster Kenya’s aim of emerging as a key figure in intra-African connectivity, while aligning with Ghana’s goals for advancing its aviation sector, fostering trade, and encouraging investments.
