701 Diplomatic Passports Revoked: Akufo-Addo's Officials Lose Elite Status

On May 6, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration revoked 701 Diplomatic and Service Passports associated with officials from the Akufo-Addo administration as well as those who have ceased holding public positions.

The invalidated passports encompass those granted to previous cabinet members along with their partners, past Members of Parliament (MPs), former Council of State participants and their spouses, as well as retired judges from both Upper and Lower courts.

Previous regional leaders and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) are likewise engaged. Former officials from government bodies, such as ex-board members, are also impacted.

Included as well are individuals connected to the National Cathedral Project, previous non-career ambassadors along with their family members, spiritual and customary leaders, business owners, and other past governmental appointees.

On May 6, 2025, the Ministry issued an official announcement stating that they have invalidated 341 outstanding Diplomatic Passports and 360 Service Passports, rendering them unusable for international trips.

"As a result of the non-compliance or unwillingness of the passport holders to follow the directive, all 341 outstanding Diplomatic Passports and 360 Service Passports with designated serial numbers have been revoked immediately as per the instruction of the Honorable Minister for Foreign Affairs. These canceled documents have been added to the stop list and will be seized should they be submitted at any entry or exit points," stated the announcement.

In a Facebook post, Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa provided additional details, explaining that these individuals had their passports revoked due to repeated failure to comply with President John Mahama’s instruction to return them.

“These passports, issued under the previous administration, are now on a Stop List at all border posts and Ghanaian embassies abroad. They will be seized if any attempt is made to use them,” Mr Ablakwa wrote.

He stated, "Starting from January, the passport holders have persistently declined to follow President Mahama’s instructions, forcing us into this position. Nevertheless, I would like to express my appreciation to the 407 Diplomatic Passport holders and 403 Service Passport holders who adhered to the guidelines and submitted their passports."
