Health Expert Raises Alarm as Food Poisoning Cases Soar Internationally
A health expert on Monday warned of rising food poisoning and intestinal infection cases due to contaminated food and rotten fruits, stressing the need for public awareness on healthy and hygienic food practices.
In an interview with a privately owned television network, general practitioner Dr. Sadia Khalid highlighted how present climatic circumstances promote the proliferation of bacteria and various microbes in food items. This makes it crucial for individuals to be more vigilant when managing and ingesting their meals. She recommended verifying the quality of produce like fruits and veggies, staying away from suspiciously unsanitary dining spots, and immediately throwing out any spoiled-looking fruit.
She highlighted the significance of consuming purified water, storing food correctly, and maintaining hygiene to avoid contamination. She pointed out that instances of gastrointestinal illnesses and stomach infections have increased, with approximately 80 to 90 cases documented each day, frequently accompanied by signs such as diarrhea and nausea.
Dr. Khalid suggested washing your hands both before and after you handle food, ensuring that all utensils and cooking areas remain pristine, and making sure to cook foods completely—particularly meats, birds, and sea creatures—to get rid of any harmful microorganisms.
Responding to a query, she explained that intestinal infections result from harmful pathogens entering the body through contaminated food or water. These infections can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever, and in severe cases, may lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and life-threatening complications.
