Bhimavaram (Andhra Pradesh), India, May 7: To emphasize the significance of protein-rich diets and sustainable fish farming, Right to Protein (RTP) collaborated with Skretting India as a knowledge partner for the inaugural 'Shrimp-a-thon' - #ShrimpForHealth , a consciousness-raising event aimed at enhancing domestic shrimp consumption And public awareness regarding shrimp as a premium source of protein. This event was held on May 4, 2025, at Vishnu College in Bhimavaram.
Organized by Skretting India ,a division of Nutreco and a pioneer in aquatic feed solutions, hosted "Shrimp-a-thon." This event gathered an array of stakeholders including farmers, aquaculture specialists, health care providers, policymakers, chefs, and educators. The purpose was to highlight the nutritional advantages of shrimp and its significance in India’s protein narrative.
As a significant engagement initiative, Right to Protein (RTP) installed an interactive Protein-O-Meter station. Here, participants evaluated their protein consumption levels and discovered how incorporating shrimp contributes to a well-rounded diet. The setup included informative brochures along with branded items designed to underscore the significance of regular protein intake and dietary variety.
Shrimp-a-thon serves as an exceptional platform to emphasize a crucial point—shrimp plays a significant role in India’s aquaculture economy and stands out as an abundant yet underexploited source of protein," stated Chandrasekar S, Head of Aquaculture Utilization for South Asia at USSEC. "We are delighted to back this effort with the aim of encouraging more Indians to recognize their daily protein requirements and opt for wiser, nutrition-focused dietary decisions.
Discussing the significance of shrimp in India’s economy, Saurabh Shekhar – General Manager at Nutreco stated, “Despite being among the world's top producers of shrimp, India exports 90% of what it produces. Considering India faces a protein deficit and shrimp is rich in proteins along with essential Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids, this offers substantial potential. Shrimp plays an indispensable role in India's aquaculture sector and could serve as a significant protein resource domestically. We’re excited to collaborate with Right to Protein in raising awareness and promoting protein adequacy.”
On the opportunities and growth of domestic shrimp consumption Ravi Kumar Yellanki, President of the All India Shrimp Hatcheries Association, stated, “With a population of 1.4 billion and an expanding middle class, India holds significant promise for internal demand. Shrimps serve as an outstanding source of proteins with abundant nutritional value. As people become more health-conscious in India, it’s crucial to inform them about these advantages. Increasing both accessibility and public knowledge could help us capitalize on this opportunity. Similar to how shrimp consumption increased twenty-fivefold over fifteen years in China, India too can experience comparable expansion through advocacy for local consumption.”
Shrimp is a nutritional powerhouse—packed with 22% protein, crucial micronutrients, and important vitamins," stated Dr. Manoj Sharma, founder of the Zhingalala brand. "Being an ardent supporter of, domestic shrimp consumption since 2015, I believe it offers immense health benefits, especially in a country like India where protein deficiency is widespread. With our vast population, it's crucial to embrace locally produced, high-quality protein sources. I fully support the Right to Protein campaign and firmly believe that non-vegetarians should make the most of this versatile and homegrown superfood."
More than 500 runners joined the marathon, creating an energetic and informative environment with activities such as a live shrimp counting station from Zhingalala, T-shirts, medals, certificates, and various amenities for participants. Notable figures at the event included key opinion leaders (KOLs) and distinguished guests like Ravi Yellanki—President of the All India Shrimp Hatcheries Association, Ramraj Dhamodar—Director of Padmanabha Labs/HiBreeds Aquatics, Dr. Manoj Sharma—the founder behind Zhingalala, Pravash Pradhan, and others.
The 'Shrimp-a-thon' represents a significant advancement within the larger Right to Protein (RTP) initiative, highlighting the connection between nutritional education, eco-friendly fish farming, and community involvement.
The 'Right to Protein' initiative seeks to boost public knowledge regarding the significance of proteins and urges governmental bodies, corporations, and institutions to emphasize protein creation, dissemination, and intake within their strategies and operations. This encompasses advocating for eco-friendly farming and livestock management techniques, funding advancements in protein studies, and guaranteeing accessibility to an array of cost-effective and nourishing protein options. Additionally, this movement highlights the worldwide issue caused by insufficient protein levels, which poses a substantial risk to public well-being, notably affecting less developed countries. Through endorsing varied protein resources under the 'Right to Protein,' the objective is to elevate nutritional safety, better overall health indicators, alleviate impoverishment and food scarcity, and foster sustainable growth.
