Deputy Finance Minister Pledges Swift Fund Disbursement for Health Sector

Accra, May 7, GNA - Mr. Thomas Ampem Nyarko, the Deputy Minister for Finance, has reiterated the government's dedication to promptly providing financial resources for critical healthcare services. This effort aims to protect the welfare of Ghanaians and enhance overall national productivity.

"The government's dedication to the healthcare industry continues unwavering. This is evident as we have removed the cap from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), leading to an allocation of GHS30 billion for supporting this sector," he stated.

During a discussion with GAVI CEO Dr. Sania Nishtar at the Ministry of Finance, the Minister provided this confirmation.

Mr. Ampem Nyarko stated that as Ghana gets ready to move away from GAVI support by 2030, the administration remains committed to establishing the nation as a leading pharmaceutical center in the region.

"By setting up a pharmaceutical center in Ghana with support from GAVI, we hope to generate job opportunities and enhance the value of our local assets, which is an essential move for the economic growth of Ghana," he stated additionally.

Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, attended the meeting and praised GAVI’s leadership for their significant contribution to bolstering Ghana’s immunization efforts.

He noted that Ghana presently stands as the frontrunner within its sub-region regarding immunization rates.

Dr. Nishtar praised the government for making healthcare a priority, commending Ghana’s vaccination program as a robust trust-driven system that has notably increased female participation in immunization services.

She remained optimistic about the nation maintaining its progress in vaccination rates and preventing backslides caused by possible holdups in financial support.

Dr. Nishtar likewise committed her team’s availability to offer transition engagement assistance, ensuring a smooth process for Ghana.
