Discover the Hidden Gems of Cornwall: Filming Locations of 'Beyond Paradise'

BBC hit series Beyond Paradise might lack the tropical Caribbean setting of its originating series, Death in Paradise , yet it still boasts several striking settings.

The spin-off show, starring Kris Marshall plays the role of Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman with Sally Bretton playing his fiancée Martha Lloyd, takes place in the fictitious town of Shipton Abbott. Devon .

However, in reality, a number of the shooting sites used for the show are located in the adjacent county of Cornwall, including the coastal town used to depict Shipton Abbott.

Discussing his time filming in the South West, Marshall commented: "I genuinely adore shooting scenes near the seaside."

As series three gets underway On BBC One on Friday, March 28th, we explore some of the locations featured. Beyond Paradise The team has utilized for the performance.

Looe, Cornwall (Shipton Abbott)

Prominent amongst the numerous sites along the southwest coastline utilised by them is the Beyond Paradise The team is based in the charming fishing town of Looe.

Although the show is based in the imaginary town of Shipton Abbott in Devon, much of the footage featuring the town was shot in Looe, Cornwall instead.

In Looe, Fore Street has transformed into Shipton Abbott Market Square, whilst Loe Bridge now serves as part of Shipton Abbott’s landscape. Additionally, the Guildhall within this Cornish town acts as the backdrop for depicting Shipton Abbott’s police station.

Ahmadi stated: "We're firmly rooted there now and have excellent support."

I really enjoy how folks can stop by and observe our filming sessions in these locations.

It's pleasant to have a live audience from time to time.

When you attend drama school, you primarily focus on theater, but working in television doesn't necessarily include that immediate audience interaction.

“Thus, having folks observe as we film in locations such as Looe is quite unique.”

Although Dylan Llewellyn, portraying PC Kelby Hartford, mentioned: "Looe is consistently one of my favorite spots."

It's such a charming location, and everyone around is incredibly welcoming, always very supportive during our shoots.

Rame Head, Cornwall

Rame Head is an impressive promontory located near Plymouth and situated within the boundaries of Cornwall, forming part of the South West Coast Path.

Perched at the summit stands a medieval chapel that formerly served both as a hermitage and a lighthouse.

Marshall mentioned that it is one of his preferred spots for shooting the series.

He said: “It offers stunning views and has a fascinating abandoned military site, complete with old tanks and artillery steps.

It’s an excellent location for shooting scenes, and once your day at work ends, you can make your way to a hidden cove for a dip.

Mothecombe Bay, Devon

Mothecombe, a sandy shoreline located on the southern coastline of Devon approximately 10 miles away from Plymouth, was frequently used as a filming location. Beyond Paradise .

It is accessible solely by foot and entails a stroll of 10 to 15 minutes from the closest parking lot.

Another favorite location is Mothecombe Beach, a hidden gem reachable only by walking," stated Marshall. "We occasionally shoot there after dark, and the small changing hut on the cliffs serves as an ideal green room.

It’s a snug area featuring a wood-burning stove and makes for an ideal relaxation space during breaks.

Saltash, Devon

Saltash is a town located near the Cornish boundary, right next to the Tamar River, which separates it from the city of Plymouth.

It frequently serves as the entry point to Cornwall.

The Weary Friar Inn within the town has served as the location for shooting some of the pub scenes in the series.

Anne Lloyd’s home is situated closeby at the quay on the Pentillie Estate in St Mellion.

The Pentillie Castle and Estate is not accessible to the general public but can be booked for weddings, corporate functions, and film productions.

Charlestown, Cornwall

The small fishing community of Charlestown, located near St Austell on the southern coastline of Cornwall, served as the setting for an episode in season three.

The filming occurred near the harbour and out at sea last September.

Zahra Ahmadi, who portrays DS Esther Williams, mentioned it’s "challenging to choose" a preferred filming spot, yet "Charlestown really makes an impression".

“She mentioned, ‘It was absolutely beautiful, and we lodged at a charming hotel close by in St. Austell.’ She added, ‘We also had some of the staff join us on their days off whom we had gotten to know, and it turned out to be quite enjoyable.’” --- She commented, "The place was stunning, and we found accommodation at a delightful inn near St. Austell." Adding further, "To add more joy to our stay, we extended an invitation to some of the employees whom we befriended during our visit; they joined us on their leisure time making it incredibly entertaining." --- "She stated, 'Everything looked magnificent, and we resided for nights in a quaint lodging not far from St. Austell.' Continuing with enthusiasm, 'Additionally, we asked several team members over—those whose company we enjoyed—and spending their free day this way made things highly amusing.'"

Port Eliot House & Gardens, St Germans, Cornwall

The house and gardens of Port Eliot in St Germans, located between Looe and Plymouth, are frequently used as a filming location. Beyond Paradise .

The Ten Mile Kitchen at Martha’s restaurant is indeed The Stables café located within the estate.

Although Port Eliot House serves as the Shipton Abbey Manor House in the series.

Port Eliot is a Grade I listed stately home and former priory, situated within gardens and expansive landscaped grounds.
