Modi Silent as US Tariff Hikes Raise Concerns: Congress MP Gurjeet Aujla

Ahmedabad (Gujarat), India, April 9 -- As worldwide worries grow regarding escalating economic pressures due to increased tariffs from the United States, Congress Member of Parliament Gurjeet Singh Aujla criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his lack of comment on the issue.

Following the All India Congress Committee (AICC) meeting in Gujarat, Member of Parliament Gurjeet Singh Aujla from the Congress party criticized the administration for overlooking critical economic problems while promoting bills such as the Waqf Amendment Act.

"Everyone around the globe is discussing the economy and responding to the tariffs implemented by America. However, the Prime Minister hasn’t commented on this issue. He remains tight-lipped," Aujla stated to ANI.

Referring to the Waqf Amendment Bill, Aujla said that Congress had already made its position clear and informed people about the government's actions through the legislation.

"He pointed out that we've already informed everybody about their actions in the amendment," he alleged, charging the Center with diverting attention away from significant economic problems by concentrating on divisive matters.

His comments arise amid India confronting diplomatic and trade challenges subsequent to the latest tariff declarations by the U.S., igniting global discussions.

The Member of Parliament from the Congress party raised concerns about the government’s quiet stance and absence in addressing the potential economic repercussions that might impact Indian exporters and enterprises.

On Wednesday, Congress Member of Parliament Syed Naseer Hussain sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that Modi’s claims regarding “appeasement” towards opposition parties were “untrue and entirely false.”

He stated that the Prime Minister did not address the queries posed by the Congress and reiterated points made earlier by members of his party in Parliament. Hussain challenged the BJP’s backing of the Waqf bill in both 1995 and 2013.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claims are false and entirely fabricated. He merely echoed what his predecessors said in Parliament without addressing our concerns. We asked for specific examples of appeasement policies. Furthermore, if such actions were indeed acts of appeasement, then why did the BJP back this legislation in both 1995 and 2013?" stated Hussain to ANI.

Following Prime Minister Modi's accusation against Congress on Tuesday regarding their practice of "appeasement politics," he stated that the new Waqf legislation aims to guarantee respect and dignity for everyone, particularly those from marginalized communities.

A congress politician named Pawan Khera criticized Prime Minister Modi regarding Modi's claim of "vote bank politics" targeting the congress. He stated that his party consistently worked towards satisfying all segments of the population.

"Congress has always focused on satisfying all sections of society...but has never engaged in mere pacification. When the Prime Minister realizes that the Congress has met the needs of every segment of society and not just resorted to appeasement, only then might he understand how to govern effectively," Khera said to ANI.

He additionally charged that the BJP has been "opposed to the constitution" since the days of the Hindu Mahasabha and Jana Sangh.

"Congress has adhered to the path set by the Constitution and remains committed to doing so. In contrast, the BJP has always been opposed to the Constitution—from its days as part of the Sangh Parivar, through the Jana Sangh, and the Hindu Mahasabha—and continues to be so today," Khera stated.

At the News18 Rising Bharat Summit, Prime Minister Modi stated that those who believed India’s progress would be gradual and steady will now see a swift and daring India. He emphasized that when development is fueled by ambitions, it tends to be both inclusive and sustainable.

Prime Minister PM Modi stated that "appeasement politics" has posed a substantial obstacle to India’s progress. Discussing the recently amended Waqf-related legislation approved by Parliament, he highlighted that the controversy around Waquf originates from this form of political approach, emphasizing that such dynamics are nothing new.
