Democratic Governor Jared Polis criticized Governor Gretchen Whitmer regarding tariffs as the nation prepares for further developments in President Trump's trade conflict.
This development occurs as both governors are considered potential candidates in the crowded race for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
On Wednesday, in a tweet on X, Polis seemed to disagree with the Michigan state leader's evaluation of Trump's trade taxes.
During her address in Washington, Whitmer stated that she does not inherently oppose tariffs; however, she criticized Trump's across-the-board strategy. She pointed out that just hours ago, Trump had backtracked after initially implementing them.
"These past few days have been extremely challenging for Michigan," Whitmer stated during her address.
"I’m not entirely opposed to tariffs, but they are an imprecise instrument. You shouldn’t use them as a sledgehammer for every issue without having a clearly defined objective," she went on to say.
The Colorado The governor shared the clip from Whitmer's speech again, however, he contended that 'tariffs are inherently detrimental.'
"The 'tariff hammer' ends up hurting your own hand instead of striking the nail," Polis stated in his post.
"Tariffs are detrimental from the start as they result in increased costs and cripple American manufacturing," he went on to say.
He contended that trade is inherently beneficial since all involved parties end up improved following an agreement they consented to.
The posting highlighted a disagreement among Democrats regarding the timing and implementation of tariffs.
Although the potential democratic candidates for 2028 seem divided regarding the overall usage of tariffs, they have generally stayed unified in opposition to Trump's strategy.
During her address on Wednesday morning, Whitmer cautioned that automobile manufacturers were amassing components and letting go of employees, while suppliers were postponing expansion plans and dealerships were increasing prices in anticipation of the trade conflict.
She similarly criticized Trump's tariffs, pointing out that economists referred to them as 'the biggest tax hike in almost six decades,' which would lead to higher cost of living.

However, Whitmer admitted that she recognized the 'reasons' driving Trump's tariffs and concurred with him regarding the importance of increasing domestic production within the United States.
We require equitable trade practices," she stated. "No state has experienced the impacts of offshoring and outsourcing as intensely as Michigan.
She cautioned that there is no easy way out and emphasized 'strategic reindustrialization needs to be a non-partisan effort extending across several presidential terms.'
A few hours afterward, Trump declared via social media that he would suspend increased tariffs on almost every country except China for a period of 90 days, while keeping the standard 10 percent tariffs unchanged.
Following Trump’s retreat, Polis published an additional statement regarding the president's strategy on X.
"I am grateful that President Trump found a partial exit from his damaging escalation of tariff taxes," he stated.
"I hope the administration takes steps to prevent further turmoil over the next 90 days and aims to remove the leftover 10% tariffs from our partnerships," he went on.
