Koech passed away while receiving medical care at Nairobi Hospital. According to his relatives, his remains have now been moved to Lee Funeral Home.

He started his schooling at Segemik Primary School and then moved on to Tenwek High School for his O-levels and A-levels.

Koech held several high-ranking positions in the government during the tenures of past Presidents Daniel Arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki.

In 1988, he was named as the minister for Public Works; however, his tenure lasted just until 1989 before he was removed from office due to alleged conflicts with Moi and senior governmental figures.

Even after the controversy, he subsequently resumed his career in public service as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to UNEP from 1998 to 2000.

During Kibaki’s tenure as president, Koech served as the minister for East African Regional Cooperation from 2006 to 2007.
