Presidential Oaths and Shifting Allegiances: A Nigerian Dilemma (International Edition)

In the sphere of political leadership, the presidential oath stands as a profound pledge to champion justice, accountability, and ethical governance. Icons such as Abraham Lincoln and George Washington exemplified this through their strong moral guidance and inclusive visions. They underscored that leaders must prioritize the welfare of the populace over anything else. Nonetheless, President Bola Tinubu’s recent conduct has sparked significant doubts regarding his dedication to these principles.

For numerous people in Nigeria, Tinubu was previously respected for his dedication to democratic principles and upright governance. This reputation stands out due to his past efforts with figures such as my uncle, General Alani Akinrinade, who together helped bring about democracy in opposition to Sani Abacha’s tyrannical rule. These alliances were once seen as embodying a pledge to both national cohesion and principled guidance. Nowadays though, his conduct often indicates a shift away from these noble standards.

The choice made by Tinubu to disregard the advice offered by an advisory committee concerning the Lagos State House of Assembly vividly illustrates his inconsistent loyalty. Led by distinguished individuals like Chief Bisi Akande, the committee suggested that Mudashiru Obasa should resign due to significant accusations against him. Rather than following this guidance, Tinubu supported Obasa following a private discussion with legislators. This action suggests a disconcerting emphasis on political expediency at the expense of adhering to the moral duties associated with his position.

The suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has escalated discussions regarding Tinubu’s ethical guidance. The Senate cited serious misconduct as the reason for her dismissal; however, her claims of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio continue to be controversial. Tinubu’s lack of comment on these significant issues highlights his cautious approach to addressing questions of fairness. This passivity erodes confidence among the populace and indicates an overall hesitance to promote responsibility.

The political turmoil in Rivers State highlights Tinubu’s tendency to avoid taking decisive action. Demands for intervention amidst rising conflicts between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Minister Nyesom Wike have mostly resulted in inertia from his side. His preference for maintaining personal connections rather than serving the broader public good has become a recurring theme. As a result, this approach undermines democratic principles and fosters growing disenchantment among the populace.

The dispute in Osun State bolsters the critique of Tinubu’s partial backing. Despite Governor Ademola Adeleke of OsunState voicing worries over inappropriate instructions impacting local administration, Tinubu’s reaction has remained subdued. His limited involvement in addressing issues within Osun State underscores a recurring tendency to prioritize political allegiances over adherence to legal principles. Consequently, this stance accentuates his waning dedication to maintaining neutrality as mandated by the presidential pledge.

An evident instance of Tinubu’s bias is his continuous endorsement of Mudashiru Obasa, regardless of significant backlash. The fact that Obasa openly declared himself as "Tinubu’s boy" further intensifies the belief that individual allegiance trumps impartial responsibility. Additionally, Tinubu’s reluctance to publicly dissociate himself from this apparent favoritism undermines the moral benchmarks required for top-tier governance. His unconditional support clearly diverges from the ideals of equity and accountability.

Each decision to support favored allies underscores a broader pattern of political expediency under Tinubu’s rule. His selective allegiance routinely overrides objective accountability and casts doubt on the integrity of his leadership. In doing so, this pattern not only undermines democratic institutions but also compromises the public’s faith in their government. Prioritizing personal connections over the common good is a dangerous path that steadily weakens the nation’s moral fabric.

These actions collectively lead to a significant decline in the ethical expectations previously held for leaders in Nigeria. Tinubu’s strategy prioritizes political expediency and individual allegiance, frequently undermining fairness and responsibility. His partial backing during several disputes offers minimal space for impartial administration. This ongoing neglect of ethical norms highlights an escalating dilemma concerning moral guidance throughout the country.

The deterioration of ethical norms during Tinubu’s leadership is clear throughout various aspects of his rule. His partial support of contentious individuals, his lack of response to significant transparency concerns, and his inability to address urgent challenges all exacerbate this disconcerting pattern. This conduct gradually undermines the confidence crucial for a thriving democracy. Additionally, it establishes a perilous example for forthcoming administrations in Nigeria.

President Tinubu’s recent moves highlight a notable failure in upholding moral guidance and fulfilling the presidential pledge. By consistently favoring individual allegiance over governmental responsibility, he has severely undermined the credibility of his position. Rebuilding public confidence necessitates an unwavering dedication to openness, equity, and communal welfare. It is only through reinstating these ethical standards that Nigeria can reconstruct its democratic structure and ensure a fairer tomorrow for every citizen.
