Envision a People's Senate: Imagining Direct Democracy
It has been an intense struggle to divert attention from the constant humiliated disgrace permeating the Nigerian Senate. Despite efforts, this challenge remains significant. No matter where you look, the controversy involving Godswill Akpabio and Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan continues to echo its humiliation both personally and nationally. Nevertheless, key figures persist in appearing detached and unbothered. However, beneath their facade lies an evidently tarnished institution. Senators strive to present the highly shameful situation as merely a question of procedural guidelines within the Senate. They aim to separate the Senate President from responsibility for these issues. Their claim—that the problem isn’t tied to their leader who bears ethical and legal obligations—is difficult to accept.
We honor individuals such as Senator Francis Fadahunsi, who possess integrity and demonstrate it clearly. As an elder statesman, Senator Fadahunsi exhibited wisdom when addressing this contentious issue. He urged his fellow senators to prioritize competency and ethical standards among other values. Such principles bring joy and contentment both personally and spiritually. Based on Senator Fadahunsi’s remarks in the Senate chamber—a setting so quiet during his speech that a pindrop could be heard—he garnered the commendable reputationSenator Edward Kennedy once claimed for himself.
Kennedy stated, "I consider myself a connoisseur of enjoyment. Being a senator has brought me joy, as have raising my children and spending time with dear friends. Reading books, listening to music, and savoring meticulously prepared meals—especially those topped generously with creamy sauces—are some of my favorite pastimes. The companionship of women has also been delightful, along with indulging in strong cocktails or two—or perhaps three—and appreciating the refined flavor of fine wines. There were moments when I allowed such delights to consume me entirely." Although Senator Edward Kennedy may appear somewhat unrestrained in this candid admission, his sincerity cannot be doubted. Born into America’s renowned Kennedy family, many of the experiences he described came naturally to him prior to securing a seat in the nation’s Senate. His privileged position was further enhanced due to his father's considerable clout. During his tenure in Congress, however, he garnered the nickname 'The Lion of the Senate'—not merely owing to his prolonged service but because of how profoundly he influenced U.S. legislation and public welfare.
Here, genuine heartfelt expressions are rare even among individuals who occasionally display such openness; this doesn’t extend to our elected officials. Their true nature becomes evident through their actions—like those described by "The Lion" from America’s Senate—who start cruising around town in brand-new luxury vehicles before relocating altogether to much pricier neighborhoods. Our attitude reflects an inclination towards maintaining privacy and tranquility after enjoying abundant success. Nonetheless, achieving great fortune doesn't make us inherently modest.
Nevertheless, our senators lead lives akin to those of Senator Ted Kennedy, continuing their lavish lifestyles at our expense. This was exemplified during the previous administration by one senator in Nigeria’s lower legislative house. In a remarkable display, this individual transported all four of his wives along with several of his many offspring from an undisclosed location to the Green Chamber of the National Assembly in Abuja. Through this act, he sought to demonstrate not only his indulgent lifestyle but also his dedication as a Nigerian legislator. By showcasing his family—his prized possessions—he conveyed his passion for his role and shared his wealth with the world.
None of our senators have shown such boldness like that representative from the House. This unusual behavior may be something some senators wouldn’t hesitate to emulate. Despite their generally more mature demeanor, considerable efforts and funds are devoted to managing our challenging 109 youngsters. Consequently, even minor probes into understanding them often lead to significant opposition and responses.
Senate approves early voting measure for further discussion VIDEO: Natasha removed due to serious misconduct and disruptive conduct — Senate responds IPU urges Senate to maintain communication in resolving leadership conflictsWhen Comrade Adams Oshiomhole became a newly elected senator representing Edo North, he encountered an unpleasant situation. He stated publicly that he had to spend his own money to purchase furniture since what should have been available in his office had been removed by the former senator. As a result, he faced pressure to apologize for these comments and received instruction stating that items like desks, chairs, computers, and air conditioners depreciate at a rate of 25% annually. In response, Oshiomhole apologized to the Senate, claiming that his statement about buying furniture out-of-pocket stemmed from finding his office devoid of essential furnishings—a scenario perhaps designed solely to elicit sympathy or amusement.
Certainly, the Nigerian populace exhibits remarkable tolerance as a collective. Time and again, our disillusioned leaders at all levels subject us to poor governance, yet their actions barely provoke significant backlash; some may express discontent through the press only to fade into obscurity soon after. Subsequently, these officials escalate their misconduct, intensifying both misrule and unethical behavior. For example, within the Senate, the role of an effective opposition seems negligible, leading many citizens to doubt whether such checks still function effectively within the legislative body and across national institutions. Notably, during Senator Ireti Kingibe’s hearing in the Senate, she passionately declared that Nigeria’s upper house lacks friendliness towards opposing viewpoints—a profound observation rooted in personal insight. This sentiment echoes today amid controversies surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan dynamics. Witnessing systemic persecution directly influenced Kingibe’s perspective, which mirrors how contemporary discussions around Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan frequently blur critical issues under layers of feminist rhetoric, patriarchal norms, political maneuverings, and ethnic tensions. As a result, discernible truths become obscured amidst this cacophony.
Even though this is disheartening, we remain oblivious to the deep divisions among Nigerians whenever politics and politicians come into play. Our nation offers us no refuge amidst these challenges. What could explain this situation? How can we overlook the rapid decline in ethical standards within our struggling country? It seems that perhaps what’s needed is a renewed version of Nigeria since the current state appears like a degraded landscape. Yet, who would take such initiative? Pondering over mobilizing Nigerians to peacefully oppose their political leaders and demand change...
The day Natasha cried "Order 10!"—exercising her right as a senator—she found herself denied this very privilege when the phrase "get ready to suspend her; have the sergeant-at-arms remove her" echoed through the microphone. Eventually, the Senate complied with the orders issued by their emperor.
Ponder a scenario where the Nigerian Senate is questioning the rise in imported fuels within the nation, even with claims of boosted domestic output. Envision discussions in our legislative assembly focusing on Nigeria’s ongoing energy issues and the rampant corruption affecting electricity distribution.
