Nairobi - The Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang'ula, has spoken about the chaotic confrontation that took place inside the parliamentary grounds.

The incident, recorded on video, featured Umulkher Harun, an appointed ODM Party legislator, and Iman Falhada Dekow, who currently serves in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

On Wednesday, April 9, Wetang'ula stated in his address that the circulating video regarding the altercation portrayed the Parliament in an unfavorable manner.

"After examining both the video and the incident report, it is evident that the aggressive confrontation has tarnished Parliament’s image and could potentially undermine its dignity, integrity, and even the respectability of the parliamentary premises," Wetang'ula stated.

After reviewing the footage, the speaker barred Falhada from the precincts of the Parliament until she delivers a written explanation about the ugly incident.

"Meanwhile, Hon. Falhada is immediately barred from entering the parliamentary premises and using its facilities for 90 days, except on the specific date and time when she will submit her written explanation to the Speaker," the presiding officer stated.

Regarding the nominated ODM legislator, Wetang'ula instructed her to clarify matters with the chairperson of the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) prior to Monday, April 12.

"As such, I instruct the nominated member to explain themselves in written form to both the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Service Commission by 5 PM on Monday, April 14, 2025," declared Wetang'ula.

At the very same session, the Speaker also warned members of parliament about recording such events inside the chamber, suggesting potential penalties for the person who captured footage of the two legislators fighting.

"The individual allegedly responsible for filming the incident is reportedly a serving member of parliament. If these allegations prove accurate, they would likely face consequences under provisions outlined in the Parliament Powers and Privileges Act Cap 6," he stated additionally.
